A little bit about our journey

We thought we would start our Clicks for a Cause blog by giving you a few blog posts about our journey. In 2005 Rick and I met and fell in love. I never knew what Cystic Fibrosis was until I met Rick's sister, April. April was born with the genetic terminal illness and diagnosed at a few months old. She spent a lot of time at Children's Hospital throughout her life. She looked healthy from the outside but I learned quickly she had been fighting a tough battle inside. I watched her check her blood sugar levels for her Diabetes, take enzymes and other pills to help her digestion and do her breathing treatments to help break up the mucus in her lungs. I remember getting the courage to ask Rick what her life expectancy was and him telling me between 25-30. My heart dropped as April was 21 when she became a sister that I never had. I could not imagine what her, her family and friends went through knowing she had a terminal illness with no cure. April documented her journey with journals and photographs that I hope to share those to help bring awareness to Cystic Fibrosis through her own words. April lost her battle in 2010 just 5 days from her 25 birthday after going through two double lung transplants at Presby Hospital in Pittsburgh. We are excited to share our journey with others as it allows us to keep her memory alive, spread awareness and hopefully help find a cure for CF. We have asked others to share their stories of dealing with children with chronic illness and special needs in hopes they can inspire others. Love, Dedication and Team work help Mary's Elephant win the Spirit of Relay Award! We were honored to be part of an amazing Relay for Life team called Mary's Elephants on June 21, 2014. Clicks for a Cause ran a fundraising photo booth and were taking event photos as there didn't seem to be an official photographer in sight to capture this touching event. I was personally on the team as the team captain is my best friend, Anita. I have blogged about her and her efforts to support those battling cancer and those who have survived cancer. As I documented the event with my camera I could see what a great united team Mary's Elephants was, they even won the Spirit of Relay Award!     The American Cancer Society describes the Spirit of Raley Award as ,   " Relay For Life Team & Individual Spirit Award!  Everyone that participates in Relay has TEAM spirit! Do you believe?

Do you believe that things no matter how big or small they seem at the time happen for a reason? During Aprils service the Pastor gave a beautiful speech about a caterpillar and it's struggle in to become a butterfly. It really touched our family as he related it to April's journey. He talked about how Aprils struggles with her health issues helped shape her into the beautiful women she was. As much as her family wanted to take her pain away it was her journey. It was only fitting that Pastor Steve married me and Rick 9 months later wearing a Butterfly Stole. We released butterflies in memory of lost loved ones and specifically April, who lost almost 25 year battle with Cystic Fibrosis, my business partner Juli who passed away unexpectedly at age 33 due to an unknown heart issue, my Grandfather who died in the line of duty as a Fireman and Rick's maternal grandfather who died when Rick was little. Check out the BUZZ Anita created for Relay

Well I am almost lost for words from Anita's Head Shave Event last week. I was seconds from tears the entire event. Seeing Anita and others doing such a selfless thing for such a huge cause! Anita is on a mission to let others know about Relay for Life and tell the stories of those in her life touched by cancer. The event was such a huge success. The VooDoo Brewery was a cool venue and the band, Bishop Road, was awesome! Heather the hair stylist did such a great job keeping everyone smiling and calm when they were getting "shaved". I was excited that Anita and her event made her local newspaper, The Meadville Tribune. The event had 7 participants and raised over $1300 in donations. She also was able to get one of the local county commissioners to shave his mustache for his families Relay for Life Team.
